Sisterhood Isn’t a Buzzword. It’s a Practice

The Sisterhood Advocacy Empowerment Initiative is a real group of people showing up for each other. Not in theory, but in rooms, on calls, in clinics, and at city council meetings.

It started because I kept hearing the same thing: women, trans folks, and gender-expansive people were being told their pain wasn’t urgent, their ideas weren’t valid, and their leadership wasn’t “ready.”

So we launched Ewmagwork. Not as a side project, but as a direct response.

Our mission? To shift who gets to speak, who gets believed, and who gets funded (starting) with those most often left out of health policy, research, and advocacy spaces.

We found a gap no one was naming: support that assumes your intelligence, honors your history, and refuses to gatekeep care or power.

Justice isn’t abstract here. It’s the nurse who gets paid fairly. It’s the teen who walks into a clinic and hears “What do you need?” instead of “What’s wrong with you?”

Inclusivity means nothing unless it includes people who’ve been told they’re “too much” (too) loud, too angry, too nonbinary, too poor, too disabled.

We serve Black, Brown, Indigenous, queer, trans, disabled, and low-income communities first. But our doors stay open. If you show up ready to listen, learn, and act, you’re welcome.

I remember the first meeting. Three of us in a borrowed conference room. One had just gotten denied Medicaid coverage for hormone therapy.

Another had spent six months documenting racist treatment in her OB-GYN office. We didn’t wait for permission.

That’s how this began.

Solidarity isn’t a slogan. It’s showing up with food, notes, bail money, or silence (depending) on what’s needed.

Integrity means saying no when a funder wants us to soften our language about reproductive justice.

This isn’t sisterhood as performance.

It’s sisterhood as labor.

Sisterhood Activism Ewmagwork is how we name the work. Not as charity, but as repair.

Without them, everything else cracks.

Advocacy means showing up where it hurts. Economic justice. Healthcare access.

Workplace equality. Those aren’t abstract goals (they’re) the three policy areas we track, testify on, and organize around. We don’t wait for invites to city hall.

We show up with petitions, data, and stories. We run awareness campaigns that land in DMs, not just press releases. Policy reform happens when people who live the problem draft the solution.

And then demand it be heard.

Empowerment is hands-on. Not inspiration. Tools.

Financial literacy workshops cover rent negotiation, not just budgeting apps. Public speaking training starts with saying “no” in a meeting (not) TED stages. Leadership development means practicing delegation before you get promoted.

Digital skills training teaches how to spot surveillance tools in your work email. Not just Canva shortcuts.

That’s why Sisterhood Activism Ewmagwork isn’t a slogan. It’s how we name what holds it all together.

I met Lena at a community workshop last spring. She’d been laid off six months earlier. No savings.

One town passed a paid sick leave ordinance after our advocacy cohort testified (seven) women, all working retail or food service. They’d never spoken in public before. Now their voices are in the city code.
